How to Use This TV Viewing Distance Calculator

  1. Enter your TV screen size, measured diagonally in inches.
  2. Choose the resolution — 1080p, 4K, or 8K.
  3. Choose the viewing location — Sofa, Armchair, Bed, or Kitchen raised counter.
  4. Click Calculate for a recommended seating distance range, a sweet spot, and mounting height from both screen centre and lowest edge.

Understanding Viewing Angle, Resolution and Mounting Height

Viewing distance recommendations are built around a target field of view — the angle the screen width takes up from where you're sitting. SMPTE's more relaxed 30° angle suits casual, mixed-use viewing, while a tighter 36–40° angle gives a more cinematic, immersive feel, but means sitting closer.

Resolution sets a practical floor on how close you can sit — below a certain distance, individual pixels become visible. Higher resolutions like 4K and 8K pack more pixels into the same screen size, so they allow a noticeably closer minimum distance than 1080p.

Mounting height is based on seated eye level, which changes depending on where you're watching from — lower for a sofa or armchair, higher for a raised kitchen counter stool, and higher still for a bed where you're propped up on pillows rather than sitting upright.

Worked Example: A 65-Inch 4K TV on a Sofa

A 65-inch 4K screen gives a comfortable seating range of roughly 1.98m to 2.69m, with a 2.21m sweet spot in between. For sofa seating, the screen's centre should sit at 107cm from the floor — for a 65-inch screen, that puts the lowest edge of the screen at around 67cm from the floor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far should I sit from my TV?

It depends on your screen size and resolution. As a general range, sit between roughly 1.2 and 1.6 times the screen's diagonal size for 4K, or 1.5 and 1.9 times for 1080p. Use the calculator above with your own screen size and resolution for a precise range.

What size TV do I need for my room?

Work backwards from your seating distance — measure how far your sofa or chair is from the wall, then use the calculator above to check which screen sizes give a comfortable viewing range at that distance.

How high should I mount my TV?

The screen's centre should sit at your seated eye level, which varies by where you're watching from — around 107cm from the floor for a sofa or armchair, 122cm for a kitchen counter with bar stools, and 137cm for a bed where you're propped up on pillows.

Does resolution affect viewing distance?

Yes. Higher resolutions like 4K and 8K pack more pixels into the same screen size, which means you can sit closer without individual pixels becoming visible, compared to 1080p at the same screen size.

Does the ideal TV height differ for a sofa, bed or kitchen counter?

Yes. Seated eye level is higher on a raised kitchen counter stool than on a sofa, and higher again when propped up in bed on pillows, so the recommended screen centre height shifts accordingly for each.
